Beauty Tips

makeup caseAre you really putting effort into cleaning out your makeup bag?  Well, take a look at your makeup bag.  Is it free of junk?  The makeup? Is it clean? Nicely organized?

Or are there nasty looking makeup products?  Could someone go into your makeup bag and think to themselves “dirty and ruined?”  When was the last time you replaced your mascara?

Have you gotten sloppy?  Have you bought new makeup and forgotten about the products you already had?  Maybe you never really liked that last lipstick you bought?  Maybe you didn’t really need another blush?  Over the years, you probably have accumulated a lot of unnecessary makeup.

I know I did!

Here are some easy tips to get your makeup bag back in shape:

1.  Wash, wash, wash!  Your makeup bag that is.  Or if after you looked at your bag you think “wow, theirs no way I’m ever getting that friggin black stuff off the sides!”   Then replace it with an old purse or buy a new cosmetic bag.

2.  Throw out makeup that is expired and everything that’s dry:

  • Discard anything that is liquid or cream (ie. cream foundations, lipsticks, bronzer, and cream eyeshadows) after one year.
  • Throw out all of your powder products (ie. loose powders, blush, pressed powder, and eyeshadows) after two years.
  • Mascara and liquid liners last up to six months.
  • Eye pencils, lip pencils and brow pencils are good up to three years.
  • Lipsticks, lip color pots, and lip gloss can be used for a total of two years.

The list above is only a guideline.  Because if you’re anything like me, you probably bought makeup used it once or twice and never ever used it again.  Now, you wouldn’t throw it away just because you’ve had it for six months or a year.  Would you?

I wouldn’t!

3.icon  So, why not do a makeup swap with your friends and family?  This is a great way to get rid of makeup you don’t use or never really liked.  And maybe you’re lucky to exchange it for something you’ll truly love.

These are simple steps you can follow to clean out your makeup bag and free it of products you don’t want or use.

Fast and simple!

When applying eyeshadow, the basic rule is to use at least three different colored shadows:

  • base color (lightest shade)
  • main color (medium shade)
  • highlighter for the crease (darker shade)

1. Always use a primer before your eye makeup. You can use a special formulated eye foundation such as Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, ($18) or  a dab of  your  liquid foundation. Starting from the lash line to the eyebrow, gently rub the primer into the skin and cover the whole eye area. Let dry before you start applying eye shadows.

2. With a large, flat eye shadow brush, apply your base color to the entire eye up to the eyebrow.

3. Then with a tapered brush, apply the main color eyeshadow to the eyelid up to the crease.

4. Lastly, using an angled brush and a light sweeping motion, apply the darkest shade along the crease of your eye from the corner to the outer edges. For a natural look and to avoid a harsh line across the crease, blend it in well with a big, soft blending brush or a cotton swab.

5. Dab a thin eyeshadow brush  into the darkest eyeshadow color and line your lower lash line.

There’s no point in using beautiful cosmetics if your skin is tired and rough.  To achieve a flawless make-up look, your skin should be in optimum shape first.  Avoid nasty foundation clumping and shine (the bad kind) with a few easy pre-application tips.

1.  The Baking Paper Test.

Your age, skin type, beauty regime and body clock can all affect where and how much oil comes to your skin’s surface.  Before you start applying your make-up, try this handy tip for testing your skin’s trouble zones.  Cut several small squares of baking paper (also known as grease proof paper).  Press squares firmly to your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. If the squares come away clean, you should have no problems with clumping foundation.  If they come away oily, you will need to take steps to fix that before you start applying your make-up.

2. Oil Ain’t So Slick!

Your grandmother may tell you to use plenty of soap and warm water.  This is the last thing you should do as your body will rush more oil to the surface to replace anything you wash away.  Instead, wash your face with a good quality, alcohol free cleanser and then use a cotton bud dabbed with a light diaper cream.  This is not the thick white gunk used to keep baby bottoms dry, it’s a cream cleanser used to remove oily deposits after a nappy change.  Ask for it at your local baby, pharmacy or grocery store as it is a wonderful moisturizer and is specifically designed to remove stubborn oil without drying the skin. Take a few squares of baking paper in your purse when going out and dab your trouble areas throughout the day or night to keep oil under control without ruining your look.

3.  Bags Are For Over The Shoulder, Not Under The Eyes!

OK, this genius little tip may make you cringe at first but it is the greatest secret weapon of make up artists everywhere.  Get great results and the hardest thing about it is, asking your local pharmacist for – ready – hemorrhoid cream.  Hemorrhoid cream is designed to sooth delicate skin while tightening it up.  You will probably feel and see a difference immediately.  But, the eye area skin is extremely delicate so this one is only for special occasions and only after seeking advice from your preferred medical professional.

4.  The Real Secret To Younger Looking Skin (Part 1)

For all the claims about younger looking skin made by cosmetic companies, there are actually skin creams that are medically proven to improve the appearance of skin.  These have been developed in labs by pharmaceutical companies, not cosmetic companies.  They have been proven beyond a doubt to improve the appearance of damaged skin.  How do you know if an anti-aging product REALLY REALLY works?  You need a prescription from your doctor or dermatologist to get it.  Usually these products are used to treat skin disorders or burns but some pharmaceutical companies are now creating versions that simply help skin repair itself from damage caused by aging and sun damage.  These products are available on prescription at your doctor’s discretion in many countries.

5.  The Real Secret To Younger Looking Skin (Part 2)

In a study done by a large, non-commercial British Broadcaster, skin biopsies were taken from volunteers using different methods of skin care.  No brand names were given (prices however, were), and as the broadcaster does not accept advertisements, the trial was shown to be impartial.  A few of the very very expensive creams contained active ingredients that improved skin quality moderately however, there was one active ingredient that stood out and out performed every other cream by a long, long way.  The best news is, it’s cheap, easy to get hold of and it becomes even more effective when taken orally – it’s good old, garden variety vitamin C.  It would seem that an apple a day keeps the doctor away but an orange a day keeps the surgeon away!

Following a few easy methods, you can provide your cosmetics the perfect canvas to create a perfect work of art for your next big night out or day at the office.

Every girl wants to feel beautiful but in this day in age who can afford all the creams, rubs, and lotions that are supposed to help you look your best? I for one don’t have the funds to take care of my acne, dark circles, Facial Hair, or stretch marks. So what should I do? Well, have you thought about at home treatments? There are many ways that you can tone down those crow’s feet or remove wrinkles without paying anything out of pocket! Most items can just be found in your kitchen cupboards! For example did you know that a beer gone flat will add some extra bounce and volume to your hair? It works! I’ve tried it! Want to know what else is sitting around your house that you can use? Well here are some beauty tips I have found that makes my skin and my pocket book feel a little better!

Dark Circles:

I have had a problem with dark circles since a teen. But I quickly found that all you need in eliminating your dark circles is a potato! Potatoes contain catecholase which is an enzyme that is used in many cosmetics to help lighten up skin!  I like to wrap my grated potato in cheese cloth and place under my eye for about 15 minutes and then I wipe off all the potato juice with a damp cloth. It’s that easy!

Wrinkles:

My Momma always used Mashed up Bananas and now that I am getting older I am finding more and more that her little “treatments” worked! So now I occasionally like to make a banana mask for myself. All you have to do is mash up a banana as much as possible then place on your face for about 20 minutes. Then wipe your face clean!

Acne:

When I was going through my teenage years I heard that honey could help those problem zits! Well, that stuck with me and a few years later I heard that apples would work well with the honey! Boy, were they correct!  Just grate up an apple and add a few table spoons of honey. There is no exact recipe for this. Just enough of each to cover your face like a mask. Leave on for about 15 minutes and wash off.  Repeat as often as necessary!

Want to add some Shine to your hair:

After your daily shampoo and conditioner you can use Malt Vinegar as a last rinse and it will add some extra shine to your lovely locks!

Crow’s feet:

Just a sliced grape will do the trick! So slice one up every morning and rub on each side of your eyes for a couple minutes! Sounds pretty simple right? Don’t get impatient with this one. It might take a few weeks but you will start to see a difference!

Stretch Marks:

Olive oil will do the trick! Rub a little on each day! Does not take much but in a few weeks you will see wonders!

There are so many fun ideas that you can do to make you feel more special. Take the time and investigate what you feel is an imperfection that you would like to focus on! You might be surprised at how easy it could be to alleviate those problem areas with just a few simple steps and some items found in your kitchen.  Nothing here costs too much just a little of your time and energy!  But remember not everything will show results over night. Just keep at it and you will see results before you know it!

Prepping Pretty Spring Skin

By Sarah Logan on behalf of Aesthetic Science Institute (ASI).

When the sun finally begins to warm our faces again, and the world slowly looks a little greener, we always feel the need to freshen up our looks a bit. In an enthusiastic hurry to apply this season’s bright makeup colors, we may forget to stop and realize that the most important step is good skincare for a clean, smooth base. After the cold wind, dry heating systems, and dark days are done with our faces, most of us go into springtime looking a little dull.

To bring your face back to life, there are some basics that always help whether you’re at a spa or your bathroom sink. Firstly, be sure to exfoliate: it can be as simple as adding salt (for oily skin) or sugar (for dry skin) to your face wash or buying one with exfoliating beads in it. It always helps to add a product with something like fruit enzymes or hydroxy acids into your regimen for added results. Going to get microdermabrasion at a local spa is a great choice for deep exfoliation that will be noticed right away. Any of these options will reveal fresh skin that is glowing and smooth.

Second, you need to continuously moisturize to have skin perfect for makeup application. If you’re getting a facial at a spa, that’s great because they will both exfoliate and moisture your skin while you’re there. At home, be sure you’re using a formula appropriate for your skin type, like a gel for oily skin, a thicker cream for dry, or something in between. Some of the face lotions with radiance/skin brightening ingredients are perfect for dewy spring skin, and are a nice boost for any look.

If we just take a little extra care in reviving skin at this time of year, the reward will be a complexion that’s more awake and well-textured. Your face will look flawless all season long!
