Gals in Glasses: How to Put Your Best Face Forward with Makeup by Sara Roberts
Wearing glasses doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the benefits and fun of wearing eye makeup; in fact, glasses bring attention to your eyes, giving you all the more reason to enhance them and make them look their loveliest. That’s why they call them “frames”—glasses frames literally “frame” your lenses and therefore your precious baby blues, browns, and greens. Here are some tips on makeup application for the glasses gals out there.

The very first thing you need to look at is the reason you’re reading this article: your glasses. Are the frames up-to-date? Do they fit your face well? Invest in a pair that look great on and make you feel good. Note the style and color of your frames—the more colorful, funky, and thick they are, the less makeup you will want to use.
Once you have the proper specs, take a look at yourself in the mirror. What do you see in those frames?
“My Eyes Look Huge!”
This probably means you are far-sighted, thus the prescription of your lenses will make your eyes appear bigger. Tread lightly because if your eyes look magnified, your makeup will, too. A few tips:
• Avoid bright colors
• Use neutral or darker shades
• Blend well
• Use mascara on only the top lashes
• Apply a little eyeliner on the top lid or do not use liner at all
“Where Are They?? My Eyes Look Tiny Behind My Glasses!”
If you’re a near-sighted gal, your lenses will make your eyes look smaller. There are tricks you can do to make your eyes appear larger:
• Use lighter, pastel colors (you can also use more bold colors, but proceed with caution and make sure to blend well)
• Avoid dark shades
• Line your upper and bottom lids
• Apply a dot of white eyeliner or highlighter on the inner corners of your eyes to brighten them
• Use mascara on the upper and lower lashes
Basic Tips for All Glasses-Wearers
No matter if you’re near- or far-sighted, these are must-know tips for applying makeup:
• Less is more – don’t pile on the makeup
• Use a cream eyeshadow to avoid getting powder on your lenses—a good eyeshadow primer will keep the shadow from creasing
• Use waterproof mascara
• Give your brows some love—keep them well-groomed and neat and use a brow powder or pencil that’s a shade lighter than your hair color
• Get rid of those dark circles—glasses can cast a shadow, making dark circles more prominent, so use a good concealer and get plenty of shut-eye
• Pretty up those lashes—use an eyelash curler and for extra oomph, try individual false lashes
• Try a fun alternative to the smoky eye by using eyeliner to create the “cat eye,” or winged eyeliner—just make sure to keep the eyeshadow neutral
Experiment, have fun, and remember—eyes are the window of the soul. Treat them well!
